Works for Me: Multiplication War

Now that school is back in session for most of us, I thought I'd share this little game that we started playing last year. I found it on one of my many Internet searches trying to find a fun way to get my kids to practice their multiplication tables- and yes, believe it or not it's actually fun. After we played it a few times here at home I shared the idea with both of the boys teachers and they used it in their classes and everyone had a blast.

It's called Multiplication War. Remember playing war with a deck of cards? Well it's basically the same thing- only it's not the person that has the highest ranking card that wins, it's the person that can CORRECTLY multiply the two cards together that wins. For instance- if one person flips over a 2 and the other flips over an 8- the first person to yell (and they do end up yelling quite often) 16 wins the cards. We make Jacks -10, Queens = 11 and Kings = 12. It really is lots of fun and and a much more exciting way to practice multiplication! Try it out- I bet your kids will love it!

I really like that game idea! We can play this with our Skip Bo cards as they go up to 12. My 9 year old will enjoy this too i'm sure. :o)

That sounds great. Amanda hates practicing math facts.

Awesome idea. Mine is starting 3rd grade this year and will be starting on multiplication, so we will certainly do this one as he loves "War"
